I LOVE Baby leg warmers! They're so practical. It keeps little legs warm and looks so cute under dresses
(or even just with a onesie).
I also love that you can change a diaper without having to remove them.
The only thing is that they're hard to find at a good deal!
I just saw some for $15!
YIKES!
I don't know why they have to be so much.
Aren't they just socks with out feet?
Anyway I made some from socks that I got for $2!
MUCH BETTER.
And they're so EASY to make.
1) Cut the heal and toes off the socks. Then throw those parts away.
Now you have two little cuffs and two long socks.
2) Turn the cuffs and long socks inside out.
3) Take the cuff and fold it inside itself so that the wrong sides are
together inside, and the right sides are on the outside.
Fold till the raw edges are lined up.
4) Sew a zig-zag stitch all around inside the cuff as close to the raw edge as you can.
The material tends to roll a bit so try to keep the edges together the best you can.
5) Slightly stretch the cuff as you sew around.
Here's your first cuff!
You can trim the excess edges off as needed.
6) Now take the long sock part and place the cuff all the way inside.
Line all the raw edges up together.
7) Sew around with a zig-zag stitch.
As you sew, stretch the cuff to the sock (but don't stretch the sock part).
8) Now pull it inside out and now to the other one.
FINISHED!
Just so cute on these little squishy legs!

ReplyDeleteSo cute! Wish I had some sewing abilities! Not that I have any little ones anymore that these would work on. But I think these are great.. especially for those cute little girls in dresses whos knees always get red when they are crawling.

ReplyDeleteThey are so cute. i love them on her chubby little legs!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorial. I just made a Christmas striped pair for my 8 month old son - only cost $3 for the socks. :)
ReplyDeletehi, my only question- Do you use girls size socks or adult size?
ReplyDeleteAdult size long socks is best to use :)
ReplyDeleteI found some at target for 1.75! so I bought a bunch and am going to make them this week.. At the risk of sounding stupid, what is the purpose of the cuffs on the bottom? is it purely for better looks or do they help keep them on? or is it that they open the bottoms a little?
ReplyDeleteI'm not absolutely sure. Maybe to give the long sock raw edge a more finished look? Without it it may not snug around the bottom as much? If you find a way of making it w/ out the cuff I wanna see how they turn out. It might be a step you could skip!?
DeleteProvo Craft offers several different products to fit your knitting, scrapbooking and art needs. There are various shapes and sizes of Nifty Knitter looms that you can choose from, depending on whether you're knitting a scarf, hat, sweater or even leg warmers.
ReplyDeleteTwo questions just to expand my sewing knowledge (which is currently VERY minimal). Is there a reason you sew around the cuff before attaching it to the long piece, rather than only sewing once around all three layers? Why did you choose a zigzag stitch?
ReplyDeleteFrom my limited understanding of sewing: a zigzag stitch is used on stretchy fabrics, such as t-shrt fabrics (jersey) and knits.
DeleteAnd I think sewing through the two layers, then the three helps align the stitches so that there's less chance of one of the layers not getting sewn, since it's a stretchy fabric and doesn't obey as well.
I have a new baby boy coming at the beginning of December- I would love to make him a pair for his blessing, what size of sock would I use to fit his little newborn legs??
ReplyDeleteWonderful Tutorial! I love it!
