It seems I'm aways out of dishwasher detergent.
Maybe I wash my dishes too much or use too much in each load.
(The real reason is I just buy the smallest box at the store).
Well I got tired of always running out
so I decided to make some of my own.
I got the recipe off a website a while back and, for the life of me, cannot find it again! At that time I wrote down the supplies and how much was needed but didn't write the source. So I had googled one that was similar here and went a little off memory too.
You will need:
A plastic container with a firmly fitting lid.
(I used a plastic cereal box and quadrupled what this recipe called for).
Mix:
1 cup borax
1 cup washing soda
1/4 cup kosher sea salt
Two packets of Unsweetened Lemonade-Flavored Kool-Aid
****Only lemon, other flavors will dye your dishwasher!****
Put all of it in the container and shake it up.
(It tends to get clumpy after sitting but a good shake will loosen it up).
Per load you only need tablespoon or so into each cup of your dishwasher.
I've tested this recipe for a little while and it's pretty comparable to
some of the name-brand soaps.
However it can leave a white filmy residue if your dishwasher doesn't get hot enough.
So I like to add a 1/2 cup of vinegar to the very bottom of the dishwasher during the rinse cycle. (If you're like me and don't watch your dishwasher to get to the rinse cycle just do it at the beginning).
The best part that it saves money too!
About 8 cents a load compared with Cascade at 22 cents a load.
And to make it cute I added a little label, of coarse.
My husband keeps wondering why I put brackets on everything! ;)

What a good idea! I've been meaning to buy dishwashing soap during my last 4 shopping trips. Good to know I can make it! I make my own laundry soap too and it's so much cheaper and smells so clean. Thanks for the idea!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great tip! thanks
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this great recipe, I can't wait to try it!!
ReplyDeleteKool Aid contains Butylated Hydroxyanisole(BHA). Half squeezed lemon will work?
ReplyDeleteBHA is a key ingredient in many processed foods. It acts as a preservative. BHA has some antioxidant properties, but it is also reportedly a carcinogen. According to the National Toxicology Program's 11th Annual Report on Carcinogens, BHA is "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen."
